Wet tail (proliferative ileitis) is the most feared disease among hamster owners for good reason: it can kill a hamster within 48 hours of symptom onset. Caused primarily by the bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis, wet tail most commonly affects young Syrian hamsters aged 3-8 weeks — particularly those recently weaned and shipped to pet stores.
Early Recognition Saves Lives
The name comes from the most visible symptom: a wet, soiled, matted appearance around the tail and hindquarters caused by severe watery diarrhea. But by the time this sign is obvious, the hamster is already critically ill. Earlier, subtler warning signs include: hunched posture (the hamster sits hunched rather than its normal flat or active posture), dull, half-closed eyes, ruffled, ungroomed coat, lethargy and refusal to move even when disturbed, complete loss of appetite, and irritability or biting when handled (pain response).
Emergency Response Protocol
Immediate Veterinary Care — Do Not Wait: Wet tail is not a “wait and see” condition. The hamster needs a veterinarian immediately — not tomorrow, not after work, NOW. The veterinarian will prescribe antibiotics (typically enrofloxacin or doxycycline), subcutaneous fluids to combat life-threatening dehydration, and potentially anti-diarrheal medications.
Home Supportive Care: Keep the hamster warm — a heating pad set to low under half the enclosure allows temperature regulation. Remove all fresh foods and provide only plain dry lab blocks and unflavored Pedialyte (or homemade electrolyte solution). Complete cage disinfection — wet tail bacteria survive in bedding and on surfaces. Isolate the sick hamster from all other hamsters immediately. Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling.
Prevention Strategies
Minimize stress in newly acquired hamsters by providing complete quiet and zero handling for the first 3-4 days after bringing them home — the stress of transport and a new environment is the primary wet tail trigger. Quarantine new hamsters from existing pets for 2-3 weeks. Maintain scrupulous cage cleanliness without excessive disruption. Choose hamsters from breeders rather than pet stores when possible — pet store hamsters endure multiple stressful relocations before reaching the sales floor.
